D&G Launches an Abaya Collection

So if you haven’t heard about, or seen Dolce and Gabbana’s latest collection, then you should probably read this.

So Dominico DoThe abayas and hijabs come in sheer georgette and satin weave charmeuse fabrics, and D&G signature lace detailing is also a strong presencelce and Stefano Gabbana, design duo and owners of their namesake label launched a new collection that was announced this Tuesday and have seemed to have caused quite a stir in the media because of the nature of the collection. It is a full on Abaya and Hijab collection (Muslim-wear).

It is not the first time that they have targeted a particular market by creating a collection keeping only them in mind (Mexico collection released last year), so why is this different? Why has it caused such a stir? And why is it so important?

So the way I see it, first of all, there aren’t any major brands that have gone this far to create an Abaya collection – yes, they have created Muslim inspired looks, but none that even touch the level that D&G areD&G's quirky lemon sunglasses add a touch of fun to the model's ensemble, which has a matching print  at. There are many Abaya brands based in the Middle East and other parts of the world that are known for creating only Abaya’s and Hijab-wear like Hanayen, Kashka and our very own Silk (Based in Fordsburg) but there aren’t any major International fashion labels that have promoted this look. SO it was a pleasant surprise to hear about and see images from this collection

.

I really love how this collection was presented. It has been done in a way that it can’t offend anyone, really. The Abaya’s are concealing (as they should be) with gorgeous prints and lace, the models are completely covered with beautiful matching scarves concealing their hair and this is really lovely. The reason I was actually surprised to see this was because I have seen quite a few Abaya Fashion Shows and images, where the model has her cleavage showing and no head covering whatsoever, and I find that it leaves the look incomplete, it may appeal to some people, but to those who wear an Abaya on a daily basis – it is definitely incomplete.

Dolce and Gabbana have managed to present a complete look that is both appealing and original. This collection will be available in Dolce & Gabbana stores in Munich, Milan, London, Paris and throughout the Middle East.

Catering to the Muslim market is a growing focus for luxury designers and high street brands alikeThis might or mightLush red roses, which feature in D&G's Spring 2016 collection, add a splash of colour and flair to this black abaya not be the start of a ‘Muslim’ fashion revolution. The Middle East is a major fashion market, especially when one considers the wealthy residents who are able to afford luxury goods. Women in the Middle East are known for their love of fashion, and although they dress modestly, they definitely don’t dress cheap. This has definitely been a move in the right direction for D&G from a business perspective.

Although the Abaya styles might be considered outdated by those who keep up with Abaya trends, the fact that they have been created by Dolce & Gabbana and have the brands distinct prints and dramatic lace might just bring the style back again.

Whether other designers to follow suit and create a similar collection, or a collection to cater to the same demographic is yet to be seen.
